STAKEHOLDER REPORT: Brexit rules shrink English clubs' pool of football talent

FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GROUNDBREAKING ANALYTICS

THE CHALLENGE

  • Investigating the effects of the post-Brexit GBE rules on the availability of footballers to British clubs.

  • Examining whether the rules are aiding the home nations national teams as intended and benefiting homegrown talent in the Premier League, EFL and SPFL.

  • Collaborating with stakeholders to share objective data and analysis on the impact of the GBE rules.

OUR APPROACH

  • We collaborated with Law firm Fragomen to conduct a wide-ranging study on the impact of GBE rules post-Brexit.

  • We shared our findings with stakeholders such as the Premier League, EFL, SFA, SPFL, and PFA, as well as the wider public.

THE RESULT

  • The report contained some eye-opening findings, including that the GBE rules have led to a drastic reduction in the pool of footballers available to English clubs, with the number of players available shrinking by around 90 per cent.

  • It showed that spending by Premier League clubs on homegrown players has continued to grow steadily post-Brexit, but is still outstripped by sums spent on non-UK signings.

  • Subsequently, our team has offered objective data and analysis support to these organisations to help stakeholders understand the impact of the GBE rules.

“Until Analytics FC and Fragomen collaborated on this report, there had been no wide-ranging study of the effect of Brexit on football, despite its enormous impact. We felt it was important to share that knowledge with key stakeholders so that the impact could be more widely understood.”
