THE CHALLENGE
Orlando Pirates, one of the biggest football clubs in Africa, faced a daunting challenge in their search for a new head coach. The club needed to find a candidate with a fresh outlook, but who also had the potential to take the team to new heights.
With so much at stake, the club turned to Analytics FC’s Coach ID service to identify the perfect fit.
OUR APPROACH
Traditional scouting methods often rely on subjective evaluations of a coach’s experience, reputation, and personality, which can lead to costly mistakes.
Analytics FC took a different approach to Orlando’s head coach recruitment. Using data profiling algorithms, we calculated coaches’ historical impact across a number of key performance indicators.
The service also provided projections of how the coach could impact Orlando, giving club leaders objective insights to help them make a fully informed decision when hiring a head coach.
THE RESULT
After delivering our research, Pirates executives identified Jose Riveiro as the standout candidate.
While Riveiro’s CV was thin, which raised questions about whether he was the right man to rebuild one of Africa’s biggest clubs, the data told a different story.
The data-driven approach paid off early for Pirates, who quickly saw results under Riveiro’s leadership. In just a few months, they won the MTN8 Cup, disposing of rivals Mamelodi Sundowns in the process.
